DJ KL has been involved in the Perth music scene for 30+ years, starting out as a guitarist before moving onto playing keyboards and synthesisers in a number of local bands.
In parallel to this live music career, DJKL discovered a deep love for DJing of all kinds, inspired by the rave revolution in the early 90s. Moving through a vast range of styles, DJ KL has graced the decks in a huge number of iconic Perth venues, including Greenwich Bar, Players, DCs, Geisha, PICA Bar, Double Lucky, The Manor, The Garden, Funk Club, The Bird, Rosemount Hotel, and Flying Scotsman, as well as numerous appearances at the Perth International Arts Festival. He also has extensive experience with DJing at all kinds of events, including weddings, corporate parties, street festivals, and underground warehouse raves. Most recently DJ KL has been a resident at the Brisbane Hotel, Ronnie Nights in Fremantle, Pirate Life Brewery, and Clancy’s Fish Pub.
Although his sets are always adapted to the venue and occasion, DJ KL’s favourite styles to play are house, disco, techno, and hip-hop, with a strong emphasis on the funky elements.
His early years of DJing at dance parties also brought exposure to the spaced-out bliss of chill out rooms, and a long lasting love affair with electronic weirdness of all kinds. Since 2011 DJ KL has been part of the Ambient Zone collective on RTRFM 92.1, where he gets to explore this more experimental side of his musical nature. As part of the Ambient Zone DJs he has played sets at several RTRFM events and supported an eclectic array of touring ambient experimental artists. He has also filled in on other more dance-oriented RTRFM shows such as Full Frequency and Underground Solution.
