As a player, Simpson built an outstanding career with North Melbourne, playing 306 games and establishing himself as one of the club’s most influential midfielders. During his time there, he captained the side for five seasons, won a club best and fairest award, earned All-Australian honours, and was a key member of two premiership teams in 1996 and 1999. His reputation was defined by leadership, football intelligence, and a strong team-first approach.
After retiring from playing, Simpson completed a coaching apprenticeship under Alastair Clarkson at Hawthorn, gaining valuable experience within one of the AFL’s most successful modern programs. This foundation led to his appointment as senior coach of the West Coast Eagles ahead of the 2014 AFL season.
