Tom enjoyed a distinguished playing career for Western Australia and Australia, representing his country in both Test and One Day International cricket. A powerful all-rounder, he was a member of Australia’s World Cup-winning squads in 1987 and 1999 and played a key role in one of the most successful eras in Australian cricket. At domestic level, he captained Western Australia to multiple successes and built an exceptional record across first-class and one-day cricket, while also enjoying successful stints in English county cricket with Warwickshire and Worcestershire.
Following his retirement from playing, Tom established himself as one of the game’s leading coaches. He served as Director of Cricket at Worcestershire before taking on the role of head coach of the Sri Lanka national cricket team, guiding the side through a period of significant development and helping transform them into one of the world’s leading international teams. He later returned to Western Australia to coach the Western Warriors and has also held senior coaching roles in the Indian Premier League.
